FAQs
Frequently asked questions
Where are the TETCs located and when will the program be available in other locations?
The TETCs are currently located in Houston and Spring, TX. But we are continuously evaluating opportunities to expand the program in other areas where ExxonMobil operates – so keep an eye out!
Who can apply and participate?
Students should be entering their freshman year of high school and can participate through high school graduation.
How do I know if I’m eligible to attend?
Eligible students should be rising freshmen at a TETC partner school with an A/B average in their math and science classes. To see if you’re eligible, complete an application or reach out to us via email. Participating schools will confirm if applying student qualifies for free or reduced lunch.
If I come to the TETC, do I have to major in engineering in college?
Majoring in engineering is not required. We do hope that those who join the TETCs have a genuine interest in STEM and are considering pursuing a degree in one of the many STEM fields.
Are families required to participate in any way, including monetarily?
The TETC is free for all students! There are no program fees and families are not required to contribute monetarily. We do hope families will support their TETC student and plan to attend orientations, student showcases, college, and career counseling events.
Does the program involve travel? How will students get to and from the TETCs?
Free bus transportation to and from the TETC is provided through our partner high schools. We do take occasional field trips and provide transportation for those events as well.
Will this program interfere with after-school activities?
It is possible that the TETC program may conflict with other after-school activities. Students register for a Monday/Wednesday or Tuesday/Thursday schedule at each TETC. Fridays are open to all students, and we strongly encourage them to attend.
What curriculum do you use?
We use the Engineering Design Process to solve real-world problems using industry technology and best practices. Our STEM modules are aligned to Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills education standards (known as TEKS) and connected to core engineering concepts.
Are staff bilingual?
Yes! Each TETC has Spanish-speaking employees and can provide STEM lessons in Spanish to support our English learners.
Who funds the TETCs?
The TETCs are proudly supported by the ExxonMobil Foundation. The ExxonMobil Foundation wants to inspire the next generation of engineers and scientists!
